Laura Whiteley, MD
Biography
Dr. Laura Whiteley is the Training Director of the General Psychiatry Training Program. Dr. Whiteley obtained her undergraduate degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. She then completed a residency in adult psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Brown University. After her residency training, she completed a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) T32 research fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital. She founded the Young Adult Behavioral Health Program at Rhode Island Hospital and received a Rhode Island Foundation Grant for her work with colleges and young adults in 2014. Laura's federally funded research focuses on interventions to improve engagement in care and adherence to medications. She has received funding from the NIMH, NICHD, and the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). Laura has been the PI on two NIMH R01s and two NIMH R34s that examine the use of mobile technologies to improve engagement and adherence to ART and PrEP. Additionally, Laura has received funding from the Aloha Foundation to examine ecological momentary assessments and interventions to measure and reduce cannabis use among young adults in psychiatric care. She is a dedicated mentor to residents and medical students and has received both the Brown Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Research Mentorship Award and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Research Mentorship Award.
