The mission of the Brown Psychiatry Residency Program is to improve the understanding and treatment of mental illness by providing the highest values of excellence in research, education, clinical care, community service, and patient advocacy. The learning environment of the Brown Psychiatry Residency Program promotes inclusivity and physician wellness.

The Brown Psychiatry Residency Training Program offers residents a balanced approach to the study and treatment of psychiatric illness. Our program aims to train physician leaders in academic psychiatry through a core curriculum of clinical assignments, seminars, and individual supervision. Residents learn psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments for disorders throughout the life cycle, and attain an advanced competence level in multiple psychotherapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. The program’s weekly didactic seminars complement each resident’s hands-on  clinical experiences, providing for a comprehensive curriculum.

Programming Tailored to Each Resident

Our program provides gradated patient care responsibilities for each resident according to their individual experience, interests, and educational needs. Supervisory experiences are designed to assess, stimulate, and sharpen each resident's diagnostic and therapeutic skills.

Choosing a Specialty to Cultivate

Residents are encouraged to focus on an area of special strength within the department, including (but not limited to) child psychiatry, general hospital psychiatry, women's mental health, alcohol and substance abuse, neuropsychiatry, geriatrics, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive and panic disorders, psychoendocrinology, psychotherapy, or community and forensic psychiatry. Residents interested in research are encouraged to participate in research through specialized research tracks.

Teaching and Leadership Opportunities

There are several leadership opportunities for residents. The Leadership, Education and Advocacy Program (LEAP) allows residents protected time to pursue quality improvement projects, small research projects, advocacy projects, and curriculum evaluations. Residents can also develop teaching skills with medical students and junior residents through the Resident as Teacher Program (RAT). There are also many committees that residents can join and lead. On the Curriculum Committee, residents help evaluate and shape educational programming. Residents on the Selection Committee are tasked with interviewing and recruiting a well-balanced and stimulating group of new residents. 

Residents also have the opportunity to meet regularly with the Chairman of the Department, the Director and the Associate Director of the Psychiatry Residency in small and large groups to facilitate the residency’s functioning.
